Hydraulic Lifter Removal Tool?
Did you have to buy 1 to remove the lifters from your engine, if so is there a special 1 or does 1 fit all?

Nope no special tool but you must remove the head. That is for the 4.0L.

If your lifters are dished (concave verses flat) on the bottom you are going to have to replace the cam too.
If you don't those new lifters won't last very long.

Just to add to Pat's answer.
If you replace the lifters it is highly recomended that you change the Camshaft at the same time. Those parts wear together and if you change one without the other you are asking for trouble. I have several links relating to cam longevity, I hope they help. Dwayne

A boar's prick (hey, it's what it's called!) works real well, or a screwdriver, or an extendable magnet...the 4.2L also requires that you remove the head...which is fine, go ahead (nyuk nyuk) and have the head cleaned, magnafluxed, and overhauled when you do this job.

The reason I got my YJ for only a grand was because the engine didn't run, and it was because the aluminum cam gear had exploded...I replaced the timing set with cast iron, the cam, lifters, and had the head gone thru, only cost $190 with new exhaust valves, and really, I guess I shoulda done the rings and bearings, but that stuff was fine, even after 150K miles...and I put it back together and it runs great...

Can the cam be replaced while the engine is still in or will it have to be pulled?

The engine can stay in the Jeep but the radiator has to come out.
BTW as soon as you can get a manual, this will answer most of your questions. Not that we mind helping .................. Dwayne

I'd also say to have the head worked. I did this when I rebuilt my 2.5L and it helped with what bit of power I have now and helped MPG too.

4.7 stroker
I do have a manual Thank You. The manual said to use Lifter tool no####### or magnet, my magnet will not get them out and I can not find the tool the manual calls for thats why I asked if any lifter tool would work. I did not think there would be enough room to get the cam out. Looked to me like the cam would hit the grill before it came all the way out. If it ticks you off to answer a question that might be in a manual then just don't answer it. |

I bought a generic lifter tool and used it to change my lifters in my 4 banger. They were still hard to pull out...stuck a bit.
You can probable rent one at autozone for nothing
