Hydraulic hood lifter struts?
Hey Guys,
Has anyone seen any kits for struts to help lift (and hold) a YJ hood in the air? My wife's 01 Explorer has them from the factory and they rule! It seems like a simple quick welding project, but has anyone seen strut kits out there? Thanks, Drew

drew2000,
Drew, have you become that lazy :-). Several sites sell them for around $40 and there's no welding involved. I am not crazy about them because in a couple of years they wear out and come slamming down on your neck, which makes for a bad day. I love the old nostalgic operation of things. Good luck Drew, Doug

I have one of the kits on my YJ and it works great. I got mine through Quadratec.

I think it's a neat idea but personally I find it easier working on my rig with the hood opened and leaned right up against my winshield frame. Then I can get at the back of the block without any issues (example: like when changing the brake master cyl like I am doing tomorrow). But hey to each his own

If you mean the shock-like things, I've always seen them drooping halfway down and kept thinking I wish they had just put in the regular rod... maybe it's because I've only seen them on older vehicles and never brand-new.
And I once cracked my head on the hood of my ex-92 Maxima (great highway car!) as the struts betrayed me by slipping down silently as I was leaning over the engine. Not for me, thanks! Are they supposed to give better access than the regular rod?

Thanks for the info. Yeah the idea is that you just lift the hood up an inch and then they take over for you. I always bump my arm into the rod when working on the engine. I'll check them out in Q-TEC and maybe give them a try.
Thanks, Drew
