How much for a totaled '88?

A guy that I've been talking to has a '88 YJ that he wants to part out. I need some things for my '89 and was thinking about buying the whole Jeep just so I would have spare parts for the future. His Jeep has a 6 cylinder motor, 5 speed, hard top. It was hit in the rear end and kinked the tub at the door and probably bent the frame. Anyone ever bought a whole one just for parts? Or should I just buy the parts I need now?

Depends on how much he's asking! If it's cheap enough and there are a lot of good parts then buy the whole thing. If you don't have any place to store, just buy what you need. Besides if you buy the whole thing, grab the parts you need, the part out the rest on here and other forums!

If you get it and the front fenderare in good shape I'll take em. You should have no trouble parting it out. You may make a little cash.

I'm with them, if the tag isnt too hefty i'd go for it. You've already got one offer from someone on this forum and you havent even decided to buy the thing yet! If the price is right you could porbably take what you wanted off it and part out the rest to break even or make some extra cash. Later <><

tranny is junk but the t-case will fit yours just fine (provided it wasn't damaged from the drive shaft slamming into it if the rear axle was pushed forward. I kinda doubt the u-jount straps on the yoke would hold that long though. and the engine is pretty much as bullet proof as you can get off road. the 4.2 is one tough engine to kill. front fenders, hood, windshield frame, axle, dash, seats and all that good stuff up front is compatible as well. how'd the top and doors hold up? if the doors are full steel or even half steel you can pick up 3-500 for them depending on condition. top can net another 300 or so. If it's drivable, I'd offer maybe a 1K and see if he goes for it. If not, 5-600. Also depends on what you want to keep and what you have in yours. there isn't too much important stuff in the rear besides the fuel tank and the axle.
