How much is a 90 YJ worth?
I have not spent much time over here on the YJ forum, but it seems the YJ's time here is expiring. We are looking at adding an XJ to the family and need to get rid of a set of wheels. Here is what I have:
1990 YJ ~120,000 miles ~4.2L (nuttered w/ carter still) Leaks a little oil, burns just a tad (synthetic oil too) (runs strong for an old 4.2, it does a signifigant cylinder wall wear on #1) ~Rebuilt AX-15 @ about 100,000miles (5th gear mesh cracked) Shifts smooth ~Has a very sticky clutch (is new with slave) I think the master cylinder needs replaced ~Rust in one spot, behind the passanger side fender flare (starting to bubble) ~Has a skyjacker 2.5 lift (springs are rusted) with the hydro shocks (no t-case drop) It does have sligh vibes at take off, could be cause by a warn Slip-yoke. ~Oil pressure gage does not work ~31" BFG AT's on AR wheels ~Besttop seats installed at about 100,000 ~Soft top hardware only works if duct taped together ~Upper soft doors need replaced (zippers are shot) And a few photos of it..... the annoying "Its a jeep thing" banner is GONE!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This YJ also has a Salvaged Title. It was rebuilt in 1993 with front end damge. This is also when we purchased it. Also gets about 10mpg on average. Whats the verdict guys? Is it even worth selling, or should we just keep it? Thanks in advance.

I have been playiing around with numbers today:
KBB says its worth $2,850 (in fair, however it is more poor) NADA is reading these three: $3,450 $4,500 $5,350 Edmunds.com says this: $755 $1,021 $1,489 This is the reason I posted this question.... $750-$5,350 is a BIG differance I have searched a few sites (such as e-bay) for a comparable rig. None are close to what I have. I am also not sure how much the "salvage" title would effect this rig since it was repaired over 10 years ago. What would you pay? |

my advice for the oil problem, don't put synthetic in it. try a synthetic blend/higher mileage oil for good performance/better results. i know a guy that used nothing but proline for 150,000 miles, and had no problems. then he tried synthetic and it was oozing out of everywheres.

Boom- That is a good suggestion, however it just leaks a little out of the rear main. heck even my Rubi is doing that
After dealing with the valve cover gasket for many years, I finally got it to seal using a 4.0 gasket. I also run synthetic oil to clean out the engine. The valves used to have a nice coating of goo on them, last time i changed the gasket they were coated in normal oil. |

Depends on how long you want to wait. Their is probably someone out there to give you $3500 for it, you have have to look long and hard to find him.
I'm going to look at a jeep later today 1989, 63,xxx miles, 6cyl, 5spd, hard top, 1in body lift, needs tires and drivers floor. Other than that it's in "good" (according to seller) shape although i've yet to drive it. He wants $2900 for it and i'm going to try and chew him down to $ 2500ish. You might be doing yourself a favor to fix the master and gauge as well. That's the kind of thing a lot of people will look at and walk away. I got about $1000 less for my Grand Cherokee then it was worth because it had a bad cat, most people heard that and said no thanks even though I was taking that much off for a $300 job. The clutch master cannot be too expensive and the guage is probably a $25 sending unit. The thing that I think might really hurt you though is that salvage title, that's another one that will turn a alot of people away on sight. Last edited by pyro9862; 04-02-2005 at 07:44 AM.. |

Still a good looking rig, most of the defects on your list would be consider acceptable for the age of the Jeep. Same goes for the salvage title. That being said i think at $3500 it would sell in a short amount of time.

The YJ is also "nuttered". Will it be hard to convince a person that it was the best thing to do? I have also reworked the harness in order to get rid of all the extra plugs. There is no way a person could "bring it back to stock". Under the hood it looks so clean.
My biggest question is this: How do you part with a Jeep you have owned for over 10 years and spent many painful hours workin on it? I really do not want to let go of it locally, I would hate to see somebody abusing it, ahhhhh ![]() Last edited by 87warrior; 04-02-2005 at 10:59 PM.. |

Money is not much of an issue, but I am wanting to dump 2,500 in to the Rubi's lift and tires
We are slowly running out of room here, and the driveway is turning into a dealers lot. Sure it would be a good project Jeep, but it still runs good and is a pretty poor base (D30/35). I also failed to metion these defects (recalled them when driving today) ~Broken defrost cable ~Broken vent cable ~Very hard starting ~Warn out fron Tie-Rod ends ~Warn out Ball joints The list keeps getting longer, maybe i am just trying to convince myself that nobody would pay high dollar for this rig. On the other hand, maybe its time to not be so selfish and let another poor soul see the "light" in the world of Jeeps |

When money isn't an issue for me, I take a good guess as to what it's worth, take off a bit, and sell it. That way I don't have to fiddle with selling something just to squeeze that extra bit out of it. |

I am sure the the YJ would last another 100,000 miles with a few repairs. So I am not looking to "squeeze" anything out of it. Thanks agian guys. If I am willing to drive 500 miles for delivery (customer pays for gas) do you think it will sell easier? |

It has a salvage title? That's gonna make a big difference.

It was frontal body damage. I remember looking at it when the guy picked it up wrecked. It was wrecked in Texas after it was stolen from the oridginal owner. Looks like she took the insurance money ![]() |
