How I fixed the rear frame rust by the shackles on my YJ

I bought a 92 YJ for a deal because the rear section of the frame at the shackles was rusted on both the drivers and passenger sides. I took the gas tank out and started grinding... Once I got everything cleaned up I started measuring and designed ( using Catia V5 ) a set of 1/8" plates to go over the rusted area. With the 1/8" plates you can still use the stock bushings and shackles. The steel sleeve that the shackle bushing fits into actually sticks outboard of the frame about an 1/8" on both sides of the frame so it works out perfect... I also incorporated the factory frame holes / slots, but I over-sized them so there was room to weld the plates to the frame in those areas as well as the edge of the plates. When I had the design complete, I had the plates laser cut and started welding. Here are some pics of the results from start to finish.

After I completed my Jeep, my brother in-law noticed his frame was bad in the same area, so we fixed his the same way, then another friends and another friends and so on and so on... The repair on my jeep is going on 2 years now and it's held up great!

Nice job.

There is one thing that I would like to mention though.

You should never weld a plate directly horizontal (perpendicular to the rail). It will lead to stress cracks in that area. You should fish mouth the edges of the plates like this: < > instead of having them straight up and down.

It's been 3 years now and it's holding great! I make sure and keep it clean back there by flushing the frame out with a garden hose. But other than that it is nice a solid .

Purple Power has a rust inhibitor and is a liquid that can be sprayed with a spray knozzle inside the frame. It turns the scale to a hard black finish. Get a snake eye and look inside the frame and if it is coated good foam fill it. get the expandable stuff and cut off the excess. Does anyone know what a new frame goes for "aftermarket" for a 88-95 wrangler??
