I think by law everywhere your flares must cover any overhanging tire tread. It really depends on wether or not your state does a through inspection and if the local PD actuall enforces it. In GA, the only annual inspection is emission, no safety inspection. The local Police don't enforce tire overhang at all either. My buddy had a full width rear axle on his XJ and 37x14.50's under it. Never once got pulled over. Later <><

BEFORE I JOINED THE ARMY AND ENDED UP IN HAWAII, I WORKED AS A PA INSPETION MECHANIC, IN THE STATE ON PENNSYLVANIA YOU ARE ALLOWED ZERO TREAD PAST THE WHEEL WELLS, IF EVEN AN 1/8" STICKS OUT YOU HAVE TO GET BIGGER FALERS, BY LAW, DEPENDING ON HOW COOL YOUR INSPECTION MECHANIC IS. WE USED TO HAVE GUYS COME IN WITH STOCK WHEELS AND TIRES ON A JEEP OR TRUCK WITH 4-6" OF LIFT, LOOKED GOOFY, AND WE HAD TO PASS THEM, THEN LATER THAT DAY YOU'D SEE 'EM DRIVE BY WITH THIER 33'S OR 35'S HANGIN OUT IN THE BREEZE, BY THE WAY THE COPS CAN CITE YOU FOR IT IF TEY WISH, OR EVEN VOID YOUR INSPECTION STICKERS IF THEY WANT, ALSO DEPENDING ON THE COOLNESS LEVEL. HOPE THIS HELPS

EACH STATE IS DIFFRERENT, MY UNCLY IS A MECHANIC IN ILLINOIS, THERE IS NO INSPECTION, I ONCE SAW A CHEVELLE THAT YOU COULD SEE THROUGH BOTH QUARTER PANNELS, AND THE TRUNK, SPARE WAS JUST LAYING THERE IN PLAIN VIEW, ANYTING THAT MOVES GETS TO GO DOWN THE ROAD.

I believe in the Wisconsin DMV book, I have seen that you are allowed 3-4" past the fenders.

I drive it locally, but not on the interstate. It gets pretty scary up around 50mph.

haha, well anybody from PA know if the tire store is going to say something like "we are not going to mount the tires if they are going to be illegal"

I doubt they're concerned with flares at the tire shop. The only laws they're required to abide by, is that they can't sell or install anything that isn't DOT approved. The tire shops out here won't mount beadlocks on the vehicle for that reason, but they will mount tires to the rims.
