Hot transfer case and tranny.

Ok, I have two questions? Should my tranny and transfer case be hot to the touch after a long drive on the highway.(45min) And how often should I change the transfercase fluid if I offroad alot. I no that those chain driven transfercases tend to turn the fluid black pretty quick.
Thanks in Advance

Yes, it is normal for them to be hot.
