Hmm.. Ford 460 inside a jeep..
Just a driveline thought I have.
My Grandmother is telling me that my 460 is in her way, and since I had that stored for my old bronco, I am now wondering how well that would handle in my jeep? That's if would even fit? -I'm asking instead of measuring because my 460 is in Oklahoma and I am in Florida. I have it in my head that it would manhandle the jeep like no tomorrow but I'm curious if the horsepower/torque would actually be too much for the dinky little YJ. I plan on having a c6 and a 205 planted behind it, so I have that figured, and I will keep the 8.8/D30 for awhile after the motor swap. I ask because I'd rather use that if I could instead of buying a bronco and stealing the 351/c6/205 out of that. Plus, I'll be cool.

That's what I'm thinking.
I know I'll need to beef up the front and frame to handle the weight and torque. I guess I'll get some measurements and have one of the ford guys get me theirs of the big block. Thanks. |

Do it man. Right now im puttin in a 351w/ t18/ 205. Fits perfictly. But a 460 would rip that jeeps a new one. i drove a cj w/ a 5.0 and it hauled a$$.

The only way a 460 goes with a YJ is in a trailer towed behind it.
I can shoot you some pics of a 460 in a fullsize Ford. It's crowded under there. There's little way that it is gonna fit in a YJ without major mods. |

I'd guess that because of the overall strength of the drivetrain you're talking about all the torque of the engine/tranny/transfer case would be taken out on the frame. if it fits and you mash your foot in the floor you're likely to wind up with your right fender as a cupholder under your left hand...

i'm gonna say that it'll fit. might have to clearance the inner fender's and maybe a cowl hood but as far as fittin between the framerails it'll be fine. I think you're biggest problem is that the c6/205 combo is gonna be a bit too long, might wanna think about swappin to a np435. I've seen a 454 stuffed in a yj, fit noproblem, sure it's a chebby but they're roughly the same size.

I replaced the 435 with a big block C6 in my bronco and the length came out to be the same length, but I did think about the length situation last night while drifting off to sleep.
I am also considering the 302 or 351w. Either way, I'm hunting for the C6. The last two 435s I had gave me so much hell, I don't care to even see one anytime soon and AODs have given my buddies so much hell, I don't think I want to do that either. I'm tossing around the 302 or 351w 205/203 doubler with a c6. I'm going to see what has close to the same length as what I have now. I'd hate to buy new drive shafts, I already have a new one in the back.. I decided against the 460 because I really do not want to put all that work into beefing up the frame, and I didn't consider the exhaust. (Other than my motorcycle, this is the daily driver) Thanks for the help and ideas. If you have anymore, keep em coming. |

Man if a V-10 Viper engine will fit in a TJ and handle 500 Horses then a 460 big block will fit in a YJ and handle the power. For fender and exhaust clearance just go with a ROCKCRAWLER hood from 4Wheel Parts and get rid of the inner fenders and run the exhaust down the outside of the frame and add a leaf to the front spring pack for the extra weight. Go for it.

I've heard of it and I want to do the same. Get pics if you do it cuz I wanna see. I've already done a small block Ford, so my next Jeep I get for the ole' lady I want to put in a big block. Only thing is my machinist and I are thinkin of poking and stroking for a 514 inch monster! Let us know anyway if you do it especially exhaust routing and manifolds! Good luck!

to me its a waist of time, money, and un wanted weight.
the 460 may be BIG cubes but its kind of a dog for all that displacment. to get what you want out of that motor you need to change your heads to some eddys or mod the stock ones for bigger valves and mill it down. your then going to want to bump up the compression with some pistons. by the time you rebuild the dam thing, buy a carb that will with stand step angles. your looking at ALOT of money. if you want power, sell the 460. buy 350. they are really cheap and the you can find the stock quadra jet carbs that withtand a very step angle(something like 50 degrees, this way when your climbing a hill it will not stall on you) AND they are cheap cheap cheap. a 350 can pass 350hp with a nice set flat top pistons and some good head work. If you really want some lowend grunt, find a chev 400 crankshaft and stroke the 350 to a 383. now you can find engine mounts for the 350 into a YJ instead of spending days to mount a big ol' 460 i think i can ramble on for a long time why this is a bad idea, but ill jsut stop. so my 2 cents are if you want power go with the chev small block or a mopar 360 ps. i hate chevys but there small blocks are everywhere, relieable and cheap to build |
