High Mileage

I've been looking for a YJ for almost a year now, and what I can afford is mostly high mileage (100+, 120+). Anything that I should be weary about looking at something with this much experience?

Mileage and age are not nearly as important as condition. I bought my YJ at 107,000 miles and 10 years old and it runs like a top. A few minor problems here and there, but mechanically it is excellent.

The most important things to look for are signs that something is about to fail:

-Oil/Trans/brake fluid leaks
-leaking or really old radiator
-excessive body or frame rust
-excessive tire wear or cracking

Ask if anything has been replaced lately. A recently replaced clutch or radiator can be a major positive.

I have 150,000 miles on my Jeep and here's what I have replaced so far.

1 radiator
2 water pump (didn't really need to be changed)
3 power steering pump
4 tranny rebuilt at a 120,000 miles
5 heater core is leaking

That's pretty much it other than regular maintenance stuff like brakes and tune-ups I drive 170 miles a day, I make sure to change the oil every 3000 miles and that's about all you have to do the 4.0 is super reliable so I wouldn't worry about buying one with that many miles unless it looks like it's been beat to hell and back.

P.S. It's better to buy a stock or close to stock Jeep there's less chances that it's been wheeled which means a whole lot less of stress on major components.

Just rolled over 180,000 miles in mine, here is what I have done:

1)Water pump
2)Tranny rebuild and clutch
3)Alternator
4)Rear main seal
5)Brake booster and master cyl.

All of this has been spread out over 7 years and 60,000-70,000 miles, so dont worry too much. Just buy one and have fun. They are real easy to work on...
