Hesitation off of idle '87 I6 Manual
I am new to Jeeps and so far love it. I purchased a Jeep (1987 I6 manual) with an idling problem. After I read all I could find about this all to common problem, I decided to buy this Jeep that the seller could not get to idle smooth short of rebuilding the crappy Carter BBD. I bought it, did the 'Nutter bypass', the 'easy fix' venturie cleaning and it idles smooth as can be now. It runs excellent except for the slight hesitation off of idle. If I goose it at all, I can not notice the problem, but if I give it a little throttle (between 800 and 1100 rpms) it will cough and sputter. It also sounds like it is 'loading' up when I give it a lot of gas at lower RPM's. I have the needle out to as lean as possible, I checked the stepper to be sure it was as lean as possible prior to the bypass. I am stumped. Any ideas would be most appreciated.
Also, I did searches for these symptoms on the site and found numerous comments, but none for the sputtering off of idle for the YJ I6. If I failed to search correctly, please let me know.

Most people on here will just tell you to dump the Carter... unless you manage to tune it
I believe alot are using MC2100 carbs? |

The Weber conversion will be coming soon enough. If I can get this crappy carb to idle and run really good through the rest I think that I may have a shot at getting to run good all the way around. |
