Hey guys, I'm trying to figure out why my courtesy lights aren't working, and I've finally traced it down to there not being any power at the fuse in the under-dash fuse block. I'm talking about for the "dome" fuse, AKA fuse #5 which is a 10A fuse (fuse is good). It is a 93 wiring harness in my jeep.
So far from my searching I've found that the wire that feeds fuse #5 is colored BR/WT if I'm correct, and the other side of the fuse is a solid pink wire. I haven't seen any breaks or cuts in the solid pink wire anywhere.
What I can't figure out is where does the wire that feeds fuse #5 (the BR/WT wire if I'm correct) route to? Does it go right to the PDB, or does it go elsewhere? I'm trying to track it down so I can finally figure out why this whole circuit isn't working.
If all else fails, I'll just run a new wire from the battery/PDB to the feed of the #5 fuse.
Here's a crazy but true story. When I got my YJ about 10 years ago, the dome lights on the sound bar (not sure if that was original equipment or not) did not work. Eventually I got ambitious and started tracing circuits. Opened up the light fixtures and noticed that the one side of each bulb socket was securely 'grounded' with a screw into the light housing... which, unfortunately, was plastic. Apparently the clods on the assembly line (UAW?) continued to assemble these the way they always did, even after an apparent design change.
[For you sanity, run a fresh wire and inline fuse. Not worth sweating it too much]

Chase the feed wire back to the bulkhead connector. Does it get a feed through the bulkhead connector from the PDC? The 87 unit or a '93 harness. If they are from those two different years then you may have an issue with the circuits lining up.
Thanks, that should help me get a start to further diagnosis. Tomorrow I might unbolt my fusebox from the firewall and see what's going on behind it, just to be sure the wires are how they should be.
My dome light currently isn't hooked up, I just haven't gotten around to doing so yet. Once I get this circuit back up and working as it should be I'll get it connected into the system.
I'll keep that wire color in mind though, just in case it does happen to be it. Also knowing which fuse in the PDC it goes to helps as well so I can check all the connections at those terminals.
The whole entire 87 wiring harness was removed from the jeep and had a 93 harness put into its place. The engine harness appears to be from a 92 based off of some of the plug connector differences though, not that that should affect this much if any.
So everything electrical in the jeep is part of a 92 or 93 harness.
They haven't worked in the almost year I've had my jeep. I just haven't gotten around to diagnosing it until now though. My wiring harness doesn't really seem like it's hacked at all, so I'm kinda surprised that the issue is in the circuit before the fusebox.
The wiring going to the door switches is fine, I do need a new passenger side door switch though. My driver side switch still works though.
Here is what In have for fuse 16 in the PDC which seems to feed those lamps. Keep in mind there is a dimmer switch on the dash that also is in play. BTW does your under hood lamp work? It looks like it is on the same circuit also
I don't have an under hood light. It wasn't there when I got the jeep sadly. I guess that was something they didn't think they needed to install for the swap, so I got left without it.
I'm also missing one of my under-dash courtesy lights, I only have one. Wish I could get my hands on another so I can have full functionality.

These two diagrams are for a '93 & '94 YJ. If you forget some on the numbers/names/colors and concentrate on the circuitry pathways from the PDC fuse you will find out where the problem begins. Note how many splices in this circuitry. BTW make sure your dimmer switch is turned al the way up!
NOTE: FUSE # 16 IN ONE PIC IS CALLED FUSE #12 IN THE OTHER PIC. JUST STICK TO THE CIRCUITRY PATHWAYS
Got it figured out, checked fuse 16 in the PDC and the 10A fuse was burnt out. Only reason I hadn't checked it before is cause I wasn't sure what it powered and I didn't want to pull it and have it kill power to something that shouldn't normally have the power cut unless battery is disconnected.
Replaced it with a new 10A and it's the circuits back up and running.
Afterwards I wired in my dome light finally, soldered it inline to the wires going to the plug for the hardtop since it was so close and the easiest way to do so. Of course I pulled the fuse before soldering on any of the wires
Yeah me too, now I just need to track down a second under dash courtesy lamp and bulb cover, since my jeep only has one courtesy light. Right now I have it on the driver side so I can see when I get in, but it just looks odd having the driver side floor light up while the passenger side doesn't.
Thanks to all you guys for helping me out with the diagrams and such, I really appreciate it. I probably would've taken a couple times longer to figure out what the problem was without your help.
Check any bone yard or private part out on craigslist for a YJ or any other jeep model like an XJ or WJ they are all quite similar. They are all over eBay also.
Yeah it's so small and tucked into the corner of the PDC compared to the other big fuses and relays in the box that unless you look for it you don't notice it being there
The lesson learned is? ALWAYS check ALL fuses when in doubt FIRST before looking for the problem in the wiring, etc. BTW pulling a fuse with power going to it hurts nothing unless possibly radio memory in some cases.
Yeah no kidding. I should've looked harder at all the fuses first, had I noticed the small ones in the PDC. I originally looked at all the big fuses & didn't see any small enough of an amp rating to think it may have connected that circuit. But I gotta learn somehow

Last time I went to either of the two yards around here I didn't see a single YJ. But I'll check online to see if they have anything. I'll check eBay again too I thought I may have seen one or two

I just use a peel and stick LED strip from Walmart wired into the OEM connector.
I like the simplicity of the factory light as it already has its own mount and it's tucked away nicely too. Just makes it easy if I can have it bright enough to work for my needs with an LED swapped in it. Plus if it works with the cover on it without cutting down the brightness too much, it somewhat protects the bulb too from anything hitting it.
