Help with my 1987 wrangler
 
As some of you may remember I was here with emissions problem. still haven't passed emissions but the big issue now is it won't stay running and has trouble starting it is getting gas this problem is progressively worse I went and picked it up from mechanic shop and they have no idea what it could be. So here's what I've done
Spark plugs
Coil
New carb a carter
Starter solenoid
Fuel filter
Fuel pump
O2sensor
Cat
Cleaned engine out of carbon
Changed gears from 456 to 373
Added downdraft pulse air system to get a waiver
Changed oil
I looked at the ICm today cleaned it off put it back on
None of this has helped the stalling and the starting issue please help I'm out of money to take it to the shop

So forgot to tell you I have the 4.2 motor

When I bought my YJ it would not idle on its own and had issues running. I replaced my vacuum lines now it runs great. I wouldn't be surprised if that's your issue

make sure you have a strong ground to the battery to the chasis of the jeep, believe or not that was my starting problem for months.

Do you just add a wire and hook it to the jeep?

87 wrangler 4.2 won't start.
 
Trying to go over the vacuum it isn't right I can't find one for the lines to the carb I know they are messed up

no im talking about the normal ground that goes from the chasis to the battery.

Okay I will check I did just redo all the vacuum so all is fixed there but still won't run do I have a crankshaft position sensor on my jeep? I know the 4.0 have it but I looked today I see where it would hookup but I have no electric pigtail anywhere or anywhere to plug into for that matter

Does all 1987 wranglers have a cps
 
I just got done doing all my vacuum lines. Still wont start which didn't surprise me to bad but it usually does so I checked into crankshaft position sensor and I don't have one on mine I see where it would hook up but there's no wiring harness for it and the absence of the sensor itself my motor is the 4.2 I know the 4.0 has one but does the carberatored engines have one? :confused::confused:please help

The 4.0 was not offered in the wrangler in 1987, Also the 4.0 was never a Carbureted engine it has always has had fuel injection .
Your engine should be a 258 aka 4.2L

4.2 doesn't have a CPS. Your probably needing an ignition control module, Which is located on the driver side below the washer fluid reservoir

For what you have already spent for no effect, you could have put an EPA approved fuel injection system on the engine.

There isn't a mechanic working today that was good with carburetors when they were still being sold on new cars. All you will find is fuel injection mechanics. If you spend the time and do the required studying, you can repair and maintain a carbed motor. But it is far easier today to just install fuel injection.

If I were still running a shop and you pulled your jeep in for repair to pass emissions, I would have to ask for $2500 cash up front with no guarantee, and all work on a time and material basis, in other words- 2500 in to see if you are serious, final price could end up far more. These are complicated setups, many parts are out of production, and most locals consider them antiques, not DD vehicles any more.
