The Heep failed Smog dangit...
Took the new to me Heep in to get smogged yesterday, it FAILED... The guy that did the test said that it could be a bad Catalytic Converter or possibly an O2 sensor? Kinda bummed me out. Oh and when they were running it up on the rollers a small split in the top of the radiator appeared, I drove it home approx 12 miles and it ran the same temp it always has, guess a little 5 min epoxy is in order for the weekend, we're headed to an off road poker run at our river house. Guess it could be a lot worse...

Post your failure levels so we can help you save some $$$$$. Too bad you didn't catch that crack while at their facility; I had my Camaro on the rollers a few years back, and when they drove it on to them, the temp sensor wire that controlled the electric fans came loose, and the engine overheated and puked all over their treadmill. They said "sorry"
, gave me a 3 month waiver! They had to close that lane for the rest of the day, and I'm sure those drivers in the dozen or so vehicles behind me were not overjoyed! |

my YJ failed recently too. tried a new O2 sensor and it still failed. so I ordered a new cat. when I pulled the old one I discovered why it failed. all the honey comb stuff in the cat was gone!! it was all rattling around inside my muffler instead. So now with a new muffler and Cat im ready to go try it again

140K on the clock it was only a metter of time before the radiator let go, doesn't look to bad, hoping that I can temporarily fix it for this weekend.Quote:
Did you install the O2 sensor yourself or have a shop? How about the cat? I want to do this myself if possible.

hell yeah dude. I do all my own work on my Jeep. I have a very well stocked garage. 80 gallon air compressor, whole garage plumbed for air, Arc and Miller Mig welder, Miller Plasma cutter, several large toolboxes full of craftsmen tools and all sorts of various goodies. Matter of fact I'm heading out to the garage here in a few minutes to re-do my entire brake system. gonna be out there for the better part of the day. where you located?

I live in Sabre Springs, between Poway and Rancho Bernardo, I work in Carlsbad.
My jeep is getting a ride out to my river place tonight, gonna load her up on a buddies flatbed trailer so he can drag it out for me, it will stay there until this summer when I bring it home to start some upgrades...

On your cracked radiator, a trick that has yet to fail me on metal radiator tanks is 5 minute JB weld.
Clean the tank well, and sand the area of repair. Walmart brake cleaner works well to clean and degrease. Make sure the cap is off the radiator so it is depressurized. Mix the JB weld as per instructions, and put a glob on a piece of aluminum foil. Apply the foil and JB weld to the crack, working it in well and smoothing the edges. You should end up with a little pad about 1/8 to 3/16 thick over the crack. When cured (don't hurry this) trim off the excess foil and touch up the area with flat black paint. On epoxy repairs, I prefer to let it sit overnight before I run the engine. |
