Hayden 404 auto trans cooler

Just picked this up at Kragen for hwy hills and trail runs in Socal



anyone have any experience with these? I'm planning on installing inline with the stock radiator cooler. Running 31s with 3.55s auto/4.2l. Will be going to 33s in a couple of months... My only concern though is cooling the tranny temps too low in winter.


Will post pics of the install this weekend.

Been using hayden AT coolers for over 40 years, good stuff.

Inline is how I install as well.

don't worry about overcooling here. Doesn't get cold enough.

yes, don't worry about over-cooling

one thing, just in case it doesn't say in the insdtructions (if any) in the box... you want to run from the trans, to the radiator, THEN to the aux cooler and then back to the trans

theory behind it is, if you go to the aux cooler first, that'll cool it down some, but then going to the radiator the potential is there for the hot radiator to bring it back up to temp, basically negating the effect of the aux cooler

Good to know about overcooling not being an issue. Will be installing this weekend and hope this will help keep things running right with 33s.

Well I took my yj on a mini road trip today about 100mile round trip in 70 degree weather. The trans cooler did its job great. The "slush box" never spitted fluid out of the usual spots nor I didn't see white smoke fogging up the hwy.

So good to know. Wonder why they dont come stock. Before I changed the tq and stuff mentioned above, it looked like a blown head gasket behind me up long hills. Really looking forward to the install and results.

Anyone know of a cheap way to run inline oil temp gauge?

I believe that one is designed to go into the steel line at the inlet of the trans.

Actually over cooling is an issue. It's just as bad to have ATF that's too cool as it is too hot. ATF that is too cool can not lubricate all the parts in the transmission as well as it can when warmed, thus causing premature transmission failure. There are 2 types of coolers. Stack plate and the finned type like the one you are getting. The stack plate design will bypass the cooler when the ATF is too cold. A good thing. The finned type will not, so it will cool cold ATF, a bad thing. Now this all depends on the climate in which you live. Most run the coolers before the radiator to take the bite out of the ATF then thru the radiator to return the fluid back to normal operating temperature. In much warmer climates people run the coolers after the radiator to cool the fluid down as much as possible. Example, my brother has an excavation business and all of his trucks have the coolers after the radiator. He got a job up in Alaska and found that his trucks were having shifting issues due to the ATF being too cold. He then switched them around so they were before the radiator and the shifting issues went away. Why? Cause the radiator warmed the fluid back to normal temps. So you need to decide which works best for you in your location. I also recommend installing a temp gauge. I installed sensors on both the input and output lines using a switch to the gauge. Now I can measure how hot the ATF gets and how well the cooler is working. 150~175 degrees is optimal.

Finally got the 33s a couple of days ago, getting ready to install the cooler this weekend, anyone know which side of radiator is input and which is output? I'm looking to run the cooler in series with stock rad.

Good advice on over cooling, but not in this climate.

My transmission runs cooler bypassing the radiator cooler. I want to keep the transmission below about 220 and the radiator is already close to 200 so there's no help there.
