Hatch back won't clear 31 inch tire on tail gate.

I put my hard top back on yesterday and found out that I can't open my hatch back all the way because it hits the spare 31" tire on the tail gate (yes while tail gate is opened). I have put a shim between the spare and its mount and can get the hatch open if I push on the tire. Kind of a pain. Can't shim more because the studs arn't long enough. What have you guys done to get around this??? Thanks for the suggestions.
Peter

open the tail gate first then the hatch. Thats what i do. I have a 33" spare. Dont think there is any other way around it.

sorry i miss read your post. I dont have any clearance issues. I just have to make sure the door is fully open, or else i will hit the spare.

I had the same problem when I put my 31 inch spare on. I took a dremel and cut the right corner of the hatch just enough to allow it to clear the tire.

I am assuming that it hits the tire bump stop on the passenger side of the jeep. Does anyone make a smaller stop?

I had this same exact problem. I just took the spare tire mount and rotated it 180 deg. You have to drill one hole in the mount or you could leave the center bolt out but either way it will lower the spare tire about 5". I also ended up taking the bottom rubber bumpers off the tail gate and mounting them where the tire meets the bumper. Simple and costs only the half hour to do it.

I have 31x12.5s and a spare to match. I used this:

http://www.quadratec.com/cgi-bin/sgin0101.exe?UID=2003101614204041&T1=22202%2B03&UR EQA=1&UREQB=2&UREQC=3&UREQD=4&FNM=11&x=40&y=41

and was able to mount my spare on the back. I have to open the rear door all the way before I can open the glass but it works fine.

Hope this helps.

Get a roof rack... Put tire on roof rack. That's gonna be my solution with 35's anyways. I already of a rack on top.
