Has Anyone Heard of This?
I talked to a guy over at our local NAPA....It's one of the old stores that has been around forever (I hate the big chain stores)....The guy there has been turning wrenches for years and he gave me some advice I've never heard.
I'm chasing a knock in my engine and am about to drop the pan and do main/rod bearings and an oil pump....He tells me I'm wasting my money, and to try a different oil filter ....He's had Jeeps and say's that the 3985 filters have something inherint in their design that slows the oil and can cause a knock....He suggested replacing it with a longer filter (he gave me a Ford part#, but I can't remember) which has more capacity and better oil distribution.
He is dead sure this will help....He said he's had the same problem with his Jeep and it worked for him.

My 4.0 has always made a ton of noise.
Do you know that part number, or can you get it?

This is an old trick to increase volume of oil for race cars, but ive never heard of any other benefit. Certainly not oil flow on a standard engine. I dont think it will help you, but the good thing is it only costs a few bucks to try.

That's why I love the old NAPA stores....You go into one of these big chain stores and most of the help you find is some wet behind the ears high school kid still wiping snot on his shirt sleeve.

If you have 3/4X16 thread you can use Motorcraft FL1A or FL299 which is about twice the size of the FL1A
The metric Motorcraft filter is FL306.
As MLJeeper said all a bigger filter will do is add more oil capacity because it's bigger but if you got a knock it ain't gonna fix it.

What this NAPA guy is telling me, is that not only is the standard filter small, there is something in the way it allows the oil to flow properly....Hey, for $5 Bucks, I can't go wrong.

Remember with the longer oil filter you will need another half quart of oil.

I run the bigger oil filter on my 4.0. I use a purealator pure one PL30001. Now instead of 6 quarts, it holds almost 7.

I run the same one and I usually put in anywhere from 6.5 to 6.75 quarts.
