Hard to steer

90 Wrangler has been hard to steer for the past couple of days. I checked the power steering fluid and it was a little low, so I added some, but it's still tough. It seems like maybe its tough for a quarter turn, normal for a quarter, tough, etc. I'm thinking maybe the little u-joints in the column might be worn, but I'm not sure if that would cause the steering to be tough. Any help would definitely be appreciated.

Does it come and go? or progressively get worse? Stutter? If so, then it's a gummed up pump and steering gear. Flush all the fluid out and put new stuff in. Fixed mine.

If it's just binding, lube up the u-joints on the shaft, then on your tie rod and draglink make sure nothings bent up.

Cool tip, mine does it too, but it comes and goes. Guess I'll flush it and change fluid.....before I need to change the power steering pump

Flushing is easy and makes the gear work like new. The stuttering etc is all the old gunk building up in your steering gear, Flushing with new fluid will clean it out.

Steps....

Get hot chick to help
Get about a gal of PS fluid
Get 5 gal bucket
Disconnect return (low press) hose from pump, put in bucket
start motor, keep the resivour full while hot chick turns wheel to extents
Keep filling as new fluid+PS pump flush all old nasy fluid, crud and stuff into bucket
When fluid runs clear, have hot chick turn of motor.
Reconnect low pressure line
Refill with new fluid
To bleed, start motor, have hot chick turn to extents about 20 times to get bubbles up.
Take used fluid to AutoZone, JiffyLube or wherever
Buy beer on way home
Bang hot chick
Drink your beer

Hello, this is my first post, but have been crawling around on this site for about a week, so hello.
I too am having the same problem with my 92. Going to try flushing... do you use a solvent of any kind?

No, don't use solvent, just regular old PS fluid. i'd go with the cheapest you can find since you're essentially throwing it away.

By the way... WELCOME!

Thank you, thank you I have been doing it wrong all these years. I have been drinking the beer, then banging the hot chick. Thanks again for the proper way of doing it. I tried it your way the other night and not only was it memorable, but I also remembered her name. Before I couldn't remember it. I always just called her darlin.

So I haven't had time to flush the fluid yet, but another thought occurs to me. I'm not sure, but the belt attached to the PSF reservoir wouldn't be the pump also would it? If it is, that belt seems kind of beat, and I'm wondering if replacing the belt and making sure its properly tightened might solve the problem. Just a thought, not sure if it holds any merit.

Before you throw another steering box in it or replace the pump:
You may have bad "U" joint(s) on your lower steering shaft, instead of a bad pump or box. Disco the shaft at the steering box, turn the shaft by the bottom end and if you get the hard - easy - hard - easy feeling the "U" joints are bad. They can not be replaced. The shaft needs to be replaced.

Unless it's squealing, the belt is doing it's job, worn or not.

But if it's worn, you prolly should replace it.
