Hard to Steer

1991 2.5L yj. Riding down the road one day nothing unusual, needed to make a turn and noticed that it took much more effort to turn the wheel. It seems there are small spots when turning that it becomes easier but in all the jeep turns as if it doesn't have power steering. Checked the fluid good, checked while running and the fluid is circulating, also seems to be good tension on serpintine belt... any ideas
Thanks
-Zach

Jack the front end off the ground and with the engine running, have someone cycle through the steering, lock to lock, while you're looking at the belt/pump/hoses for anything weird. I never found my leak until I finally did this. The hoses get pressrized more and more as you turn tighter, so make sure you're going lock to lock.

Could also be the stabalizer, if you have a dinged up rod in that thing or something... might not be power steering related at all.

it's not stuck in 4x4, but i did have to do the mod where the front axle is locked (the vaccum system did not work so i welded the collar to the axles). The front axle runs through a differential so it should not cause a problem. I've had this done for a good 1000 miles never had a problem.

Check your steering shaft for any signs of rust along the joints. When mine developed rust along the joints I had spots where the steering wheel got a lot tougher to turn.
