Hard start after Scuba Jeepin'

The title says it all. I went Scuba Jeepin' and now I have a hesitant start. I hear a grinding noise and a second or two later it starts. Sometimes I have to try it once or twice for it to start up, but always after a second or two of grinding. The grinding isen't the noise of the engine turning over, it's like a really fast sound almost like a wood saw. After a second or two of that the engine turns over once and the engine starts right up just fine. I"m just worried.

What may I have messed up? (Oh, I ran over a few pine trees too)

Sounds like the starter solenoid kicking in and out. The wood saw sound sounds liek the starter gear not grabbing the flywheel?

I had the same exact problem after going through 2 feet of water last week. That noise sounded like metal teeth grinding.
It would start but grinded first.
I dont know how it fixed itself but it stopped after I stalled while wheeling on a very steep hill and restarted. Maybe the water drained out?
Try blowing some compressed air into the starter to dry/clean it out

Try the compressed air as jamesx2 said. If it doesn't fix it, you will probably have to take the starter off and clean it. Hope the air takes care of it.

I like this idea--should be easy enough to replicate.

Thanks guys! Took it into some clean(er) water today and it must have got some dirt out because it starts much better now.

You might want to pull the starter and regrease the bendix gear and hinge.

A 89 yj with a 4.0 aw4 sye out of an 92xj. Now the hard part is done time to get it up in the air just a bit. Working on 8.8 with 3.73 and lsd for the rear. and new D30 hp with 3.73 .
For those who have not figured this out I'm old school but can handle the new too.
