I resently had all of the same issues with my tranny. Sorry to say but I had to have it basically rebuilt.
First, check your clutch fluid and tranny fluid levels. Top off if needed. If this does not help, all I can tell you is to take it to a tranny specialist that you trust and hold onto your hats, it could be expensive.
Hopefully I am completely wrong and there is nothing wrong.

The problem you are having is that the pilot bearing (in some cases it's called a pilot bushing) is eather out or going out. It is a relatively easy fix. You do need to get into the clutch to do this though.

Keep the rubber side down!!!!

Hey Dog..
Thanks for your info.

Pilot bearing? Doesn't that mate up with tranny spline? It didn't realize things went in or out of it once the spline was inserted after re-mating of trans. 2 engine. Am I confused?

It could be the syncromesh going out. Its a common thing in transmissions and they wear quick. It could also be the pilot bearing. Mine does this and I am not into costly repairs to have it just go back out in a few months. Try double clutching! It works great for me. When going into 1st gear and it dont wanna go, let clutch back out and push back in and shift. It will get the syncros ligned up again and it should fall into gear. Takes just a second and seems to work on any stickshift with this problem. Oh and it works for the 3rd gear prob too.
