My 94 Wrangler has a "Steel Horse" hardtop and upper doors that bolt into my lower half doors. I'm looking for the original type of Lower Door Inserts that the upper door bolts into. I can find the inserts with the metal tabs on the bottom, and I found slotted nuts that attach to them. But my original inserts have a brass nut molded into the insert itself... they are good, solid units!
Steel Horse went out of business and sold off to other companies, but I still can't find those original molded door inserts. I just want something that is strong, and will hold the upper doors on tight without loosening or breaking.
Any advice would be appreciated!
All i can say is good luck. My solution was i had my dad machine me some pieces. The look similar to the plastic pieces, but we riveted them in. He put a half inch thread on the inside and machined a half inch bolt to thread into them. In that bolt he drilled and tapped for a 1/4 inch bolt. So the half inch bolt threads into the door insert, and the 1/4 inch holds the door tops on. It is very strong and holds them tighter than i could have ever gotten em before. Then when summertime comes hes gonna machine another half inch bolt with just a drilled hole through it that ill just slide the soft doors into it. I dont know if this helps, and from what he told me it would be real expensive if i woulda paid for it. I dont know what else to tell you because i tried to find them but had no luck.
I'm thinking about riveting three "Two Lug Floating Anchor Nuts" over the holes on the lower door where the insert would go, then bolt the top directly into them. It should work, in theory, then not have to deal with the inserts any more. I'm going to look at some anchor nuts this week, and if it works, I'll let you know!
i called a 4wheel specialist in cal. last night. they have them for $14.95 a piece...i'd like to pay a little less. the number is 1.800.792.2612. hope that helps, or gives you an idea. i've also read of people replacing the thread inserts w/ helicoils....my threads are fine..but the little clips that hold the inserts in place have broken off, and my upper halves are flopping around. good luck.
This is info that blakkbelt gave me. I would like to see the bestop ones. too see if they would work.

Here are the ones that Bestop include with their new kits...
The install process is that you remove the inserts in the half door and these little pieces clip into the bottom of those inserts (mine all needed to have the screws put in first so that they "tapped" right, then needed to be fit into the bottom of the insert)...
At any rate - they seem to work ok, at best. I don't know if there is any better solution out there or not.
Bestop does have some that can be ordered... I know I broke one of mine trying to fit it correctly and it was still under "warranty"... although, I never got new ones.
I think I need some pics I am a little lost. What is a helicoil? Is this a perminent thing or can i change back to my soft uppers in the summer?
Sorry I don't have any pics. A Helicoil is a threaded insert that looks like a compressed spring before it is installed. They are typically used to repair damaged threads. The size I used was 3/8 x 16. The kit will come with a tap, three inserts (you'll need to buy more of course), and an install tool. You tap the hole large enough for the outside diameter of the Helicoil and the inside diameter will be your new threads. I would take one of your bolts to a hardware store first and double check the thread size.
I didn't try to use the same inserts for my soft top but I suspect once the threads are in that the uppers won't fit through the hole. I use one set of inserts for my hard uppers and another set for my soft uppers.
