haha it never ends.

Ok, some of you know that I just recently replaced my clutch master cylinder after it was giving me grief for the past while. It fixed the problem, and I had a nice solid clutch pedal, for 4 days...

Now today, I'm 90% sure I just blew out my slave cylinder. I was driving home from a friends, when my clutch pedal went from perfect, to non-existant in less than 5 mins. When I had master cyl problems before, it took several days for the clutch to get really bad, so I knew this time was different. I limped home using only 3rd gear, and popped the hood to check the clutch reservoir. Not a drop. I look underside and follow the line to the transmission case. No leaks whatsoever. It all must be inside the transmission where the slave is. Sucky.

I remember reading before on this forum that when someone replaced their master, the extra strain from the strong master, blew out the slave a week later. I'm pretty sure the same thing happened to me here. Why me?

Yup and you'll have to pull the tranny to get it out....Not that hard but will take some time.

I figure it's best to do the whole clutch at the same time. Try www.dialaclutch.com for LUK. That's what I put in and i really like it.

i had the same problems that everyone keeps talking about with masters and slace cylinders so i got sick of it and i replaced everything, i mean everything including that piece of sh&^ rubber connecting tube. i think that after time the heat and the hydrolic pressure wears it out and if causes stress on the master and the slave. I put in a metal one that i made from some brake line. haven't had a problem since.

clutch issues

after 3 dealer slave cylinders, 2 master cylinders and the new hose, it finally works... this is what i learned though..

1) bleeder line... make sure that it is somewhat restrained in the small oval hole it comes out of,. the vibration causes this line to walk, then loosen up over time.. i used a drum brake adjustment cover thing.. the little oval rubber part..

2) purchased a new clutch an pressure plate.. the fingers on the clutch where the bearing contacts it.. a few of the fingers stuck out further than the others.. this i believe caused the throwout bearing to vibrate, then the little pin that holds the thing in comes apart..

just replace all of it..

the good news is, mcleod clutches is making a replacement slave cylinder for the jeep wranglers with the 4 cyl.. talk to red, hes the owner.. I talked to him about this a while ago, but he is takin his time with the production. perhaps some calls about this would help..

good luck all..

I feel for you bobby! but at least yours lasted a few days. my slave went the same night i replaced my master. i picked up my clutch set from dialaclutch for about 170. everything you need.

pirate, what's so special about mcleod clutches? haven't heard of them before.

Ah it was you then Same night, wow that sucks.

I was thinking about replacing these things myself, but I have a feeling that I will need the use of a lift (that I don't have). My jeep is lifted already, so maby I can just get under there with a hydrolic jack (that I DO have), and use that to drop the tranny, while leaving the jeep standing on 4 wheels. It will be alot of crawling around, but is it doable? I'd love to save the money and learn doing it myself. I also have fairly handy friends.

i just did it on mine a few months ago. only used the floor jack. they do sell an attachment for them that is supposed to transform it into a tranny jack. one tip i learned after i was done is to replace two of the bolts with some long threaded rods before pulling the tranny. they'll act as guides to help hold one end of the tranny up and will allow you to line up the input shaft with the splines better. it's not an easy job, but it's doable. one the tranny is down it's simple to change the clutch itself.

Jeeze, with all these slave cylinder threads I read, I cringe everytime I have to shift!

yep my slave is almost gone too, every month or so i have to bleed the system again!!! its getting old, and I think its been a while so its probably time to replace the clutch anyway.

O and you guys know about the 95 external slave cylinder swap?? theres a ton of posts on that at www.pirate4x4.com
