YJ center gauge pod fix

Just had this problem yesterday again. Last time I didn't use the dielectric grease to protect the metal.

If you remove the center gauge pod, you'll see the connector. Grab it by the side releases, & pull it out. You will see that it plugs into the flexible plastic sheet, with copper tape running all over it. That sheet is the "printed circuit"

On it you'll see the light bulbs & gauge connections. All of these need to be removed & cleaned. Even the ones that might be working.

Clean all the places where contact is made. The gauges , lamps, printed circuit, & the main connector. I used a match pack striker strip, other people say to use a pencil eraser but it doesn't work fast enough for me. Don't wear through the thin copper strips, just sanding lightly & only enough to clean the contacts.

Lastly, go to the parts store & get a tube of "Dielectric Grease" or tuneup grease. Coat all the cleaned spots with the grease & put it back together saving the main connector for last.

Now comes the trick!

If you look at the connector, you will see that it's not applying much force to contact the printed circuit.
Get some plastic forks (eating utensils) & cut about 1/8" off the ends of the tines. Then cut them all off about 3/8" long.

Place them in the connector behind each prong that is being used. (not all are used) They should fit snugly & will be held in place when you plug it back together.

This allows the connector to provide a firmer connection.

I figured this out, after having to remove the pod several times due to fluxuating needles. Once I did it, they stayed right where they should be.

Nice & tight!

Bah! Gauges are for sissies! The only gauge that works in my YJ is the speedometer.

But seriously, thanks for the tips buckshot, I'll try that out. I sure do miss my tachometer, even though it only read between 1k and 2k when it did work.
