do you think it's safe to drive with the shackle bent like that?

ouch, hope everyone was alright. on the plus side, looks like its time for a flatfender .

btw, i don't know if that is safe driving or not, but my guess would be no.

I did that a couple years ago (except it was a brick wall about 18" tall). You probably twisted the spring, so when you try and replace the shackle, the whole thing is going to come undone and you won't be able to line it up again. Find a 4x4 shop that does lifts, and buy some used stock springs and shackles from them and get them put on. I pryed my spring over so I could get replacement shackles on, but it rode like crap (wandered even more than usual) and wore my tires out FAST. I got used springs put on the front ($75 including installation) with new desert steel shackles ($40 from JC Whitney) and it fixed everything up right. I wouldn't drive your jeep like it is now. Might cause you to have another wreck as it probably won't drive or stop in a straight line (not that many jeeps do, but damage like that compounds the problem)

definatly wouldn't drive on it like that, you definatly screwed up the shackle, possibly bend the spring, which coulda damaged some other suspension parts and the rear mounting plate for the spring. and the wors part of the news is you most likely bent the frame, prolly got some sag, but it'll be a pretty easy pull

That looks nice . I did similar with an integra only difference is I only beny my bumper back about an inch anf a half, but managed to toal the integra. Damn crumple zones. The shackle definately doesn't look safe.
I have stock shackles and springs I'd be willing to work out a deal for. If interested, shoot me a PM.

BTW, whose fault?
Craig

edit: it looks like you should definately be able to cleanly flat fender that. It would be close, but the damage looks like it just stops short of too much.

i dont know of any 4x4 shop in nyc.

dunno about the fault, in going to file a claim tomorrow, see what the incurance companies say, from the police report it could go either way.

ah, that is nothing I just bought this one a few weeks ago, and it was hit pretty bad, spring broke, axle slid back, impaled transfer case and cracked it in two pieces. oth axles locked, so I had to remove teh shafts, etc.

Easy to repair, will remove front fenders (already got a grill and hood for it), and cut the rear wheels to acoomodate some 35's.

Your springs seem ok, remove the shackles, and maybe this is an opportunity to get some sturdier ones (con-ferr, etc). put a jack supporting the ubolt spring plate, another one on the front supporting the spring, unscrew teh bottom shackle bolt, and lower it slowly. Remove the shackle, and install the new one. Plenty of cheap ones on e-bay.

reminds me of mine

I hit a 2 foot rock speeding down an old railroad bed.... hit the tire bent the rim and both leaf springs. bent tie rod and drag rod send my front driveshaft out through the back of my transfercase. plus i bent my fenders and bumper in 10 minutes before...that day just sucked

From what I can see in the pics the spring looks ok. Unbolt the shackle and check for any obvious warpage to the spring. If it looks good put on another shackle and drive it.

Great time to do a flat fender also.
