Gauge - Battery or Alternator?

Hope this is not a stupid question, but does the system's electrical gauge measure the level of charge in the battery or what the alternator is putting out? I just noticed the gauge has dropped to just above the red zone at 8 volts.

thanks,

I believe it measures the total voltage available, from the battery and what is supplied by the alternator. If your reading 8 volts then either the alternator is not putting anything out or the battery is shot. Try disconnecting the alternator wiring harness and check the guage again. Also, watch the gauge when turning on all electrical accessories.

Thanks FLHT_FXRS_YJ. That sounds like a good idea to isolate the problem.

I am having a similar issue with my 88 YJ .. the voltage looks good for a while, drops to 1/2 voltage .. and finally drops off the guage .. then pops back up again. I have replaced my alternator and battery .. and no change. I am starting to think it might be a busted up wire or something .. everything else seems to be acting mostly normal.

Laters!
