Quick question-does the skid plate under the gas tank on a 89 Wrangler help secure it in place, or is it just for protection? Thanks

secures and protects

So I am guessing that I cant just remove it and find straps under it.
I need to get at some bolts covered by it to change my rear bumper, and I dont want any surprises crashing down on me. Plus, since I wont be off-roading, I dont really need the protection of the plate. But I also would not like to have the gas tank fall out while driving!

the fuel tank is actually strapped to the skid plate and the skid plate is bolted to the frame

Time to scrape some knuckles, then.
Thanks for the responses. Forums are great!!!:2thumbsup:

you CAN get to those bolts back there without dropping the tank. either with swivel sockets and a bunch of extensions, or with a wrench. just need someone with small hands and it can be done.

my hands arent exactly small and i managed to remove those funky loop bumpers.. it required some finger acrobatics though..

It's still a good idea to keep the skid plate. Backing over a curb, hitting road debris, zombie attack - any of these can rupture a gas tank if not protected, especially if you have a poly tank like I do.
And those zombies sure do know how to muck up a tank I tell ya!
