gas tank question..how many gallons?

Ive had a few different wranglers..My newest one is a 90 yj 4.2 sahara...
I think my gas gauge is wrong when its at half tank i can put 12 gallons in it..I got it down past that and was scared to run out of gas it went to a quarter tanks really quik and raced to the gas station...I ended up putting 17 gallons in it at 1/4 tank.. When i filled it up the gas gauge reads over full full tank by decent amount...How many gallons does this hold???

Sounds like it must be the 20 gallon tank if you put in 17 at a 1/4 indicated. Just be thankful that your gas guage even works !! I am jealous btw, my '90 has the 15 gallon variety.

Contact Chrysler and get your build sheet to see what it came with from the factory.

The gauges are known for being wrong. When mine reads a little under a 1/4 I am out of gas.

It sounds like you have the 20 gallon tank. 91-95 YJs all have the same 20 gallon tank but some are reduced to 15 gallons with creative use of a vent hose and a different fuel sending unit. Since yours is a 90 you most don't get to take advantage of the gas tank mod. Just keep in mind that almost all Jeep gas gauges (at least older ones) are more often wrong than right.

So am I to assume that mine is a 15 gal? I have an 87 YJ and my gas guage doesnt work, but one night I put in 16 gallons at the pump. What gives? Anyone out here with an older YJ?

If you put in 16 then you probably have a 20 gallon tank unless you were rolling in on fumes.

Pre91 YJs have either a 15 or 20 gallon tank. Post91 YJs all have the same tank with minor modifications so that Chrysler could charge extra for the 20gal option.

I just have no idea because there is a good chance that I did roll in on fumes, I stalled out twice as I was rolling across the parking lot.

The problem is that I have carb problems too. It's just hard for me to tell.

I think that your best option here is to request a build sheet from Chrysler. Search the forum for build sheet and you should find the right email address to request it from.
