Gas tank question

My fuel sender has been giving me problems since iv had the jeep so i ordered a sender last year and havnt put it on....

Here is the problem, i ordered a sender for an 88 15gal tank with 6cyl carb motor, the sender that came was round. when i dropped the tank it had a square sender on it. I am wondering if this is the right tank for the jeep, i know its been replaced once but im not sure if the right one was put on the jeep or if it came from another jeep,.

If you're talking about the opening in the tank where the sender goes into then yes it is rectangular. At least mine is on my 93.

But you have a 4.0 fuel injected i believe, im not sure though, that the 4.2 15 gal has a round opening, if you have the rectangle opening on the 4.0 i would assume that i have the wrong tank.

Mine is rectangular. I wasn't sure about yours since you have the 4.2. That's why I said on my 93. I hope I haven't confused you more??

Yes it will be a rectangle one in a plastic tank. "87-90" are carb. The difference is the carb and injected pickups. The don't make one for the carb anymore. The fuel injected one has the pump on it.

Now im confused, the replacement tanks that iv seen for my year all have round holes for the sender, even the OEM style and i cant find a rectangle sender for my year, i saw some cheap tanks on ebay so i might just get one.

They don not make a rectangle sender for the 87 to 90 YJ's anymore. You have to get one without the pump for the 91 to 97 and add the piece that is missing where the pump goes. Is this the tank you have? That is what I had to do.

Cant really reply to that.... My tank looks similar to the one in the picture. Its on the ground behind my jeep right now. I ordered the square sender as per the link I posted after talking with the Qtec guys. It should be here in a day or two and I'll let you know if it fits.

I'll add a pic of my tank in a few

And without removing the tank is there a sure way to identify if it is the larger or smaller one.

guess what just showed up at my door? Re-reading your post... you have a square opening tank. Yes it is a stock 20 gallon tank. it needs the sender that I linked up in an earlier post.
