Check the wires.

Likely as not the resistor wire that regulates the conection in the sender has broken at some point. Answer new sender in the tank although I did have an issue once with the wiring conector plug coming apart. It is about 12 inches down the rear wiring harness line from the tank itself.

My guage doesn't work either. I haven't bothered to fix mine yet, I just watch the odometer and fill up when I get to where I know it is close. You can certainly drop the tank, check all contacts, replace the sending unit, and have a working guage again. Or send the little gnome who filled your tank up during the night to my house. It is certainly better than when my gas was siphoned out last year.

Cherokee fuel guage problems !!!!

im not a jeep man but i do work on them alot........
if your guage is inop check as follows.
1) If you turn key on and it ranges to full
2) then after startup it ranges back to empty then low level light comes on.
Check harness under rear passenger seat drivers side! when you install stuff like AMPS or if you use this area alot the seat will crush wireing and this will fuker stuff up!!!

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU GUYS OUT!!!!!
