gas gauge problem

So I lent my 92 YJ to my buddy and of course he returned it with a bone dry gas tank. Well I just filled the tank and the gauge will not go over 1/4 tank. It never did this before. Any ideas?

It could just be stuck for some reason. Try hitting some bumps to see if it frees up.

Some YJ's have a problem with the "cup" in the bottom of the fuel tank warping.
Sometimes the gas gauge float will get snagged on the warped plastic.
The usual problem is the float can drop below 1/4 tank.
Sounds like you have the float stuck under the warped lip of the cup.

Here's a pic looking thru the opening for the fuel pump of a warped cup.

Thanks for the pic . Is that something that can fix itself with bumps?

Not going over 1/4 tank but moving is definitely a float issue. Try thumping the tank but I think you might have to drop the tank and pop the pump to fix it.
