Gas Gauge not working

My gas gauge is alllll over the place...Any ideas on simple things to try before I have to pull the tank. I am not really mechanical in nature...

YJ fuel level senders were not very accurate to start with. The best thing, which is what I go off, is the trip odometer. Much more accurate. As for it bouncing around, a good solution would be baffles inside the tank. Not sure how to do that though.

I had the same problem when I first bought my Jeep a couple years ago. What I ended up doing was disconnecting the battery and pulling the dash apart to clean the connectors. I found that most of them were pretty cruddy and had some mild corrosion on them after doing that the fuel gauge worked pretty good. Not perfect but a lot more accurate then it was. While I was tearing stuff apart I pulled the instrument cluster and replaced a bunch of burned out lights. Not sure if it will fix your problem as Brandon is right the YJ sending units are not the best and only seem to get worse over time, but this method has my gauge working ok.

Sorry i cant help you out there, but i just have to say that im havin the same problem. i drove about a mile and my gas guage went from reading an overly full tank to about a quarter of a tank. lol

i usually go off of my trip odometer, but the strangest thing happened about a month and a half ago. i went up into the hills and wheeled it pretty hard. Me and everything else in my YJ was bouncin around. Then i noticed a few days later that my fuel gauge actually read an accurate amount for my gas. This lasted for about a month, and i fell back into old habits again of reading my gauge instead of my millage. And of course out of the clear blue sky it stopped working and i ran out of gas in the middle of town. i still dont know why that happened.

My only suggestion would be to go up and wheel your jeep and dont come back until it starts working. lol or just wait for someone to tell us what the problem is.

I had a problem with the fuel gauge on my "new" '90 YJ. I grounded the earth wire in the loom coming up from the fuel sender over the rear left wheel and solved my problems with over optimistic fuel readings.

For my 1990 the ground wire was yellow/black.

Wiring diagrams here http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...20diagrams.pdf

Gauge doesn't fluctuate much during normal operation. Its a little more sensitive to cornering when its below 1/4F but other than that stays pretty stable.

Try cleaning the contacts on the back of the instrument panel as well.

I have the same problem, I use the odometer mine reads full the entire time until I get close to 300 miles at which point it drops like a stone and appears to read a bit more accurately. My problem might be more related to amount of use. I leave it unused for 6-7 weeks at a time with a full tank. My job has me on a rotation so I leave home for about 2 months and come home for 2 months. I leave it full for "just in case" the wife needs to drive it in an emergency. but she luckily never has one, so mine maybe sticking full for longer. I always use the odometer even in my 2005 Escape, I like to monitor fuel consumption to see if I develop any sudden changes in economy My wife drives 25,000 miles a year so even 2-3 mpg is a big deal anyway I have not answered your question other than we all seem to have the same problem. Good luck,
Bern
