Gas gauge

I just bought a 1990 YJ with a Chevy 350 in it. It's got some problems but nothing too major. One thing that's got me confused though is that it does not have a gas gauge. It has aftermarket oil pressure, temperature, voltmeter and tach gauges. The wiring behind the dash is a mess and it does have a short somewhere that I need to find.

Would it be easier to buy a used, complete set of stock gauges, or buy a separate gas gauge and wire it in? And if anyone has a wiring schematic for the dash gauges, that would be very much appreciated.

Don't know if I can answer your questions on what gauges to buy but the wiring diagrams are in the 1990 factory service manual.

If you have aftermarket guages then just work with what you have. Do you have a stock metal tank, plastic tank or a fuel cell?

It has a plastic tank.

It has a carb on it.

Pm me if I don't respond back tomorrow but what you need is to see what you have for a sending unit. It is probably a stock 91/95 with the fuel pump bypass. Needed to make sure. Run 2 wires from the dash back and install a guage. I will walk you through wiring it. Stock guage or one with the same resistance. Do you have a meter to do a few measurements?

You need to look at the sending unit in the fuel tank. How many pins are on the connector and is it wired to anything right now?

It the stock setup the guage would have 12 volts supplied from the ignition and a wire from the other side of the guage going to the sending unit in the gas tank. The float is basically a resistor with the other side tied to ground. To wire it you just need the guage, and enough wire to get the guage to the fuel pump. Post a pic of the connector if you can.
