Fuel tank skid | Belly up skid

I noticed today that the stock gastank skid's heat shield portion (Running along the exhaust) is rusted 80% off and rattling. Is it advisable to remove this portion to stop the rattling, or should I leave it on until I can get an aftermarket (And beefier of course ) skid plate with a built in head shield ?

Also what is involved / needed for a belly up skid? Is it necessary to have a BL / MML for clearance? I really don't want to install a BL on my Wrangler, as I hate the appearance.

Thanks

For the belly up you have a few choices.

make your own
kilby just made one they say no BL needed but unsure on clearance gains
AEV/Nth degree - expensive no body lift so they say but if you are standard i would get a 1"

Teraflex- 1" with auto and 2" with MT IIRC

You will most likely need an SYE and cv shaft if you don't go with the 1MML

Looking for TJ Rear Flares, if anyone has any please PM ME.

Thank you.

Still curious on the gas tank skid / heat shield question. I removed the piece that is between the exhaust tip and the gas tank -- is that important enough to get a replacement gas tank skid with a built in heat shield?

Garage
Im in the process of Fabbing a Belly up for my YJ.

as of right now so far Ive installed a SYE, 1in BL, and 1in. MML. Tommorrow I'll be getting my bottles filled for my Oxy/Ace. torch setup and cutting the skidplate out of a 1/4" 4'x8' sheet hopefully I'll be done so I can get my XJ shaft cut down

I would suggest replacing the skid, or at least patching yours in that area, if you bend the tail pipe while its hot, it could result in damage to the fuel tank, possibly but unlikely cause a fire as well. I never understood how so many people bent their tail pipes until 3 weks ago when I bent mine, easier to do than you think........

My YJ will likely not see offroad use for a long time -- no funds to cover breakage or time to go at all. She's a road pounder for now

I wheel the crap out of my jeep with no heat shield on the gas tank skid. I have crushed the tail pipe on rock climbs on numerous occasions with no problems at all. Don't worry about it just rip it off.

Well then thats a decision you need to make for yourself, my personal thoughts are keep some sort of heat sheilding there, hot metal and plastic usualy results in melted plastic.... but thats all up to you

Change out the gas tank skid plate. I bent my tail pipe and it melted my gas tank. It was parked in my garage a pouring gas on the floor with the door closed. Thank God my daughter told me before the house blew up.
