While under my jeep doing my 8.8 install, I measured the front DS angles for kicks. I found that the front TC output points up at 10* (if its parallel to the rear) and the axle points up at 6*, thats 16* difference (yes they add together as they both point up, the rear, one points down the other up) has anyone else had vibration problems from the front DS (probably should ask the TJ guys as thier DS always spin too) I'm just begining to wonder if my vibes were from the front shaft, not the rear (rear was 4* to high with the wedges removed, new springs on the way)
I had a similar problem. I had my front driveshaft balanced and it took care of the vibes. It cost about $52 to have it straightened and balanced (and painted).
This is a new DS from Tattom's, balanced and all, the original was bent, as I quickly found out after installing the locker. No one withing 100 miles of me can balance DS. I'll check to make sure I haven't knocked off the weights, or bent it tomorrow. That $52 is awsome, I was quoted $100 locally to retube my original DS and that didn't include balancing, they don't have the machine to balance small shafts they said (they are a semi place, only DS shop within about 60 miles, and no one within 100 miles can balance.
If the locker/DS is the source of the vibes, the locker will come out and be sold while I save up for a selectable then. I'm going to pull the front DS while I have it in the air, and check the new 8.8 install without the front DS to rule it out. got the new axle all ready to go in, just waiting on UPS, don't want to weld the spring perches with the old worn out springs. the R&P and rebuild the LS
BTW, nobody answered earlier about whether to use the factory cluch pack arangement, or the every other (alternating) method. I have read the alternating is more agressive, but they were all in street cars, not a light weight jeep.? ? ? ? ?
If you got a new shaft then it should be OK. I would remove it and drive around without it to make sure that's the source. If it is then I would have the driveshaft looked at again. The $52 was just for the balance. To have it re-tubed it would have cost another $100 easily which I still might do because my slip yoke is stretched a good bit.
well, things changed again. while mocking up the 8.8 install, I found out that the slip yoke (granaded the old one) that I got from the local DS co. didn't work, it had no articulation (like only 5*) the ears were way too short. spent all day trying to find one that would work, got PO'd and order a SYE/DS kit from Tattoms, even got him down to $410 shipped for everything DS and all. so I'm going out this evening to start a belly up, should help if the front shaft is vibing. I'm going to try something different on my belly up, we have no rocks here, just mud, so I'm going to cut the factory skid flush with the frame rails, use some 2x2 angle pointing up on the frame, push the skid up and weld it to the angle 1" or 1 1/4" higher, then pull and reinforce it. should match my MML that way.
well, that TC drop idea wont work as the fuel/E-brake is in the way. I fabbed up a cross member using some 2x6x1/4 (3/8 sides) channel and it looks like it might be about a 2 1/4" lift (TC). this sounds like allot to me, will it work? its not rubbing anywhere. I dropped the chanel 3/4" from the bottom of the frame rails (notched the ends) and mounted the TC mount to it. the channel facing up, and cut out for the exhuast and front of the TC.
Just had similar issues myself. Had drive shaft balanced and re-tubed after one piece axle swap and still had a vibe. To make a long story short I had the drive shaft re tubed this time with 2" tube and vibe is gone. The smaller diameter YJ drive shafts balanced or not are not rated for speeds past 45-50 MPH. This is why the later model Cherokees and all of the TJs have a larger diameter front drive shaft than a YJ. With lower gear ratios (I have 4:56) it compounds the problem.
All of this is according to Jeff at Advantage Drive line the man that built my drive shaft and re tubed free of charge to correct this issue.
