front axle seals
My passenger side seal is shot, so looks like Im gonna replace both sides while im in there. Any hints/tips, special tools as in the process of replacing them and about how hard is it to do. Also how much is it gonna run me(ballpark figure) and where did ya get them. Anything else you guys can think of to help me out would be great.

You can get the seals from any local autoparts store. If there is a schucks/kragen/checkers near you go to www.cskauto.com and you can get the seals for like $8. Otherwise i think their a whopping $10. Aside from that buy the couple quarts of gear oil to stick back in there, some RTV to seal it up and your good. Both sides shouldnt run you more then $30-$40 for everything you need.
Only advice i have is to be sure jack the jeep with a good 3 feet on either side to side out the shafts (don't ask, I felt sooo freakin retarded). Also, if you feel spunky, you can replace your bearings. |

OK, about changing the thread title. You might be right.
If only your passenger side is leaking that is a very simple job due to you only having to pull that axle. If the driver side is leaking you have to pull both axles and your differential gear. In which case as long as you are there for $240 you can install a Aussie Locker. Do a search for the thread I did last week - Replacing front axel seals - I spent a day and a half trying to get the passenger seal in, what a pain. Until I came upon a way to seat the seal. Make sure that you pull the half axle through the housing to get it out of the way. When you get the seal in it will have no problem getting past the new seal. The passenger seal is in the axle shift box on your front end, you probably knew that. |
