Frame shackles bushing getting destroyed

I seem to have an issue destroying bushing in my grease-able boomerang shackles. The bushings that go in the frame mount aren't lasting long at all.

I torqued them to 50ft/lbs but seem to destroy them in just a few outings.

Any insight would be great. Maybe I have the wrong size bushing because the ones I used are tapered like a mushroom but the lower (spring) side of the shackle looks like a more flat bushing.

I will post pics this afternoon.

Are they rubber or poly? My rubber ones only lasted about 3 months, but my poly ones have been going for about 6 months now and are just fine.

To be honest, I don't know.

I will definitely buy poly after I use these last 2 i have laying around.

poly is normally colored (red) rubber is normally black.

ah, all mine are black.

How long is the inner sleeve? I believe it should be slightly longer than the bushing on either side and the shackles should contact that and not so much the bushing.

Cheers

i noticed this when i was installing mine a few years ago. i bet this is the reason yours are wearing out, probably rubbing as the suspension droops and lifts

You guys are right my sleeve is like 1/2" from the end on each side. If this is the reason great catch!

Weird I bought these shackles last year and they came with all the hardware.

Yup, there's your problem! They should stick out maybe a 1/16" on each side. The shackles should ride on the sleeve. The bushing is there to isolate the movement from the frame and not for the shackles to rest on.

I could be wrong, but its my understanding that rubber bushings don't have the metal sleeve past the rubber - only the poly's have a longer sleeve

1/16 that sounds like a lot. I may have to revisit my bushings.

By 1/16" I mean just a hair. Just enough to keep the shackle from riding on the bushing....

Cheers

WOW never knew...Mine stuck out just a 1/16th but my buddy who has an XJ told me that the metal sleeve shouldnt stick out or be flush with the bushing. Thats why I was having front end drivablity issues. So I ended up cutting the metal sleave so its inside the bushing 1/16 on each side.

I can't seem to find it but Anti had a nifty little paint mock up showing the proper set up....maybe he can chime in and give you a little visual :)

Cheers
