Frame Repair

I have a 95 YJ. My friend made me a great spare tire carrier. When we put the new carrier on I found some weak spots on the inside of the frame rail by the rear cross member. Our thought was to cut out the old cross member, weld and fix the frame, and then weld a thicker rear cross member in. Oh I also have to fix the right rear body mount while I have the gas tank out. Anyone have the same problems??? Any ideas on the best way to fix either problem would be great.

Remember, rubber side down

Here is a shot of my rear crossmember during my CJ resto - it is made from 3/8" X 4" flat bar and is drilled & tapped (1/2-13) in 8 places to hold the custom bumper. Mine is welded over the existing crossmember since mine was OK but it wouldn't have been much more work to replace the old one completely.

Here is a shot with the bumper bolted on:

Can you show us pictures of the rust that you see? It would help us help you a little easier ..

Is the rust surface only, or is it eaten right through?
