Frame off restore with a 350 small block

I finished my 87 yj build last summer and had a blast driving it, then fall came and it was time to put her away for the winter. I decided I didn't want to give up my shop space for the winter, so I decided to put her up on craigslist for $6900 just to see what would happen. Well, 1 day and $6900 later, my jeep was gone, no haggling, no trades, just handed me the cash. I have missed her ever since. It was later that night that my wife said, "you need to build another one". Not even a month later I found what I was looking for, my new winter project. This time, no messing around with a 4.2 or even the 4.0, 350 Chevy small block baby!!!!

Here she is just waiting to be stripped down and refinished. By the way, the craigslist ad said that there was no rust. I ended up buying it anyways... Lots of body rust and the usual frame rot in the rear. Believe it or not, there was actually a piece of diamond plate over the hole in the last picture trying to hide it. I ripped it off in front of the guy and he was like wow, I didn't even know there was rust under there...

By the way, that John Deere 318 pulls that trailer with no problems. I love that little deere. Anyways, here is the 350 that will be going in. The only thing I need to do to it is replace the rear main seal. I put it in to make sure everything fit and works before I started stripping everything down.
I even had my dad come over to lend a hand in firing her up. He was drooling when I told him I was putting in an old 1971 small block that came out of a 71' k-20 pick up.

Time to tear it apart. Snapped of a few bolts, too far gone for pb blaster to help.

I think I will be looking for a new tub and frame. I did a lot of rot repair on the last one and don't really want to do it again.

Had a warm few days last week and was able to prep the frame. Here it is ready for some Chassis Saver paint. I also cut the old motor mounts off and welded in the new ones.

AX-15 tranny and 231hd case should hold up just fine. I will start off with the D30/D35 axles and just take it easy until I get a decent 8.8 for the rear.

Yesterday was a good day. I was able to get all new brake lines in, tank mounted, and the motor and tranny installed. I'll be driving this in no time.

I was also able to get my son to help out for a little while.
