ford 8.8 questions
I was thinking about putting a new rear end in my jeep and i was reading some posts and some people said that you couldn't do this swap if you have a CV driveshaft bc the diff is not centered. is this true?

Driveshafts have a 360 degree operating range. The pinion can be up, down, right or left. It doesnt matter as long as the pinion is within the operating range of the driveshaft. The 8.8 has a very small offset (2"+-), so it will not be an issue.

Also, whoever posted that garbage is 100% wrong Thousands upon thousands of folks have did it with a CV drive shaft. I have lost count with how many I have helped do. |

I just did the wife's last week and it has a CV shaft with an SYE kit installed. I actually did a better job on setting the pinion angle this time around, and it's smoother than ever. Max ![]()

Like these guys have already said, there's no truth to what you've previously heard. I'd venture to say that a large majority of people running a 8.8 do run a CV shaft.

Can someone please post what mods. and how to to change to the 8.8 in a 94 Wrangler . I need to either change mine or repair the one in mine and Mad Max has posted in my earlier post that it could be done.
Thanks, Stan |

1) Determine your axle ratio 2) Determine what axle code 8.8 you need to match your front axle 3) Locate an 8.8 axle & cut the sway bar mounts & spring perches off 4) Loosely bolt 8.8 into your Jeep, set pinion angle, tack spring perches onto axle tubes 5) Remove axle & completely weld the perches in place 6) Fabricate, buy, or cut off & reuse your old shock mounts & weld them in place 7) Plumb & bleed brakes 8) Use a pinion flange from a Ranger on the rear U-joint that will accept your 1310 U-joint Max ![]()

I thought I had read something about that but apparently not. They run the 5x4.5 bolt pattern on those right?

The '95-'01 Explorer 8.8 will get you disc brakes, 31 spline axles, and the 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern. It's 1-1/4" narrower than the Dana 35 (5/8" on each side) which turns out to be such a small amount that you won't notice. Max ![]()

When I added the Warn hub conv kit to the front though, it wasn't pretty. The Warn kit made the front 1" wider/side, then the 8.8 made the rear 5/8" narrower/side. I found I couldn't track well at all on some stuff in the woods. I'd plant a front tire and the rear would track off enough to not be nice, fall off a ledge or whatever. I decided to use 1.25" spacers on the back, which has been fine. Agreed though, completely not needed with with stock width front, and the 8.8 diff offset is a don't care too.

From what I understand, the Super 8.8 kit increases the width by 1" overall, so someone put off by the narrower width may want to keep that in mind too.
