Fog lights not working. Any help?
I have a 93 Sahara Wrangler. The foglights do not work. The headlights work fine. I am not that knowledgable in car "stuff", however, I checked to see if fuse was ok and it appeared to be.
Can anyone offer any help so I can get foglights working again? Thanks in advance!

did you wire the lights yourself? or were they already on when you bought the jeep?

Do you know where the fuse for the foglights is? I looked in owners manual and thought I was looking at right fuse. however, I figure if it was the fuse, it would be tied to something else and that would not be working also.

I know someone already asked this but i think it should be more specific. I know that you said they came with... but are they factory foglights or did a PO put them on?

To be honest, I just got the Jeep, bought used. Is there anyhow I can tell if they were put on after or factory put them on? They look like put by factory, but can't be 100% sure (sorry, not that great at cars...yet ha ha)

not sure if there is a way to tell, but it is wired through the fuse box or straight to the battery?

Unfortunately, there's not really a good way to diagnose this problem without you doing some investigating first. The best thing for you to do is just follow the wires coming from the lights. One will probably lead to a bolt attached to the body or the frame. That's your ground wire. Make sure that it is not rusted over. The other wire will be the power lead and that will go to a relay, switch or fuse, depending on how everything is set-up. A relay will be a small box with 4 wires coming out of it. The fuse may be in a fuse box (if factory, or if the PO did a nice, clean install) or it may be an inline fuse. Your problem could stem from any of these items having gone bad. Hope that helps.

Just a question that may help the original poster--- are the factory fog lights wired into the headlight low beam circuit? Reason I'm asking is when I was searching for a hot lead to have my aftermarket fog lights come on with the head lights, it seemed the three wires coming out of the headlights were ground, hot for low, and hot for bright. Correct?
Might help him chase down the wiring on his Jeep and see where the problem is located. |

How about using a jump wire to a positive 12 volt source just to see if the lights are functioning?

They are factory lights. Next thing I am going to try, because it is simplist and something I can handle with with my limited car knowledge, (I am self confessed "city slicker"), is to check to see if bulbs are ok. However, it would be a win in the unlucky lottery if both went out at close to same time.

If they are factory fog lights, there is a relay in the fuse box in the engine compartment you should check.

As havasu says ,the first thing I would do is check 'em with a known 12v power source so you're not chasing your tail all day. Just make sure you have a good ground by putting the ground side to a clean bare metal spot on the frame. That way you know if the bulbs are good and the ground was bad all at the same time. Then you know what you need to chase down!

Factory fogs will not work when the high beams are on becasue they are wired into the low beam headlight circuit due to most if not all state laws. I had a miserable time with mine and I was aslo having intermittent problems with my low and high beams also. One would work then the other wouldn't work then they would all work etc etc.
Come to fine out I had to remove the plugs from the back of the head lights and remove all the wiring from said plugs. I cleaned the contacts with steel wool and contact cleaner. Then put everything back together again and presto! they worked. |
