Flowmaster on a 2.5l

hi
i just swaped a 99 2.5l in to my 95 yj wrangler so i guess my jeep is now a y/tj anyway
the people who i bought it from had cut of the exahust.
so i have a slight problem.
my dad remembered that he had a 2" flowmaster from way back when he raced mini stocks(volkswagon rabbits)
emmisions are not a concern
and
will going straight from the down pipe to this flowmaster
work,
ive heard that a catalytic converter in a 2.5l actually is better on then off for power

please only comments from people who know 2.5l motors cause its not the same as a v8 or 4.0l

I had removed the guts from my cat a few years ago and the engine would get a hellatous backfire every now and then. I had installed a new flowmaster catback and replaced the cat with a flowmaster hushmaster II and it made the engine real quiet. The fumes were not very fun so replaced it with a new cat. Little more noisy. You may not like a flowmaster alone, mine was a little to loud when i tried it. My alltimate go was to get it as quite as possible for hunting coyotes, and would install the hushmaster if I had the room. maybe by the gas tank, have to mesure later tonight.

It acts much better with a high flow cat than without one.

any one get better MPG with a high flow cat? What is it?
I am trying to get all the HP and MPG increase i can out of 2.5l TJ. replaced the old cracked manifold with a PaceSetter header. Now looking to replace cat and muffler. Hoping I will get some gain with a cat back system but would a high flow cat be worth the effort?

highflow cat= stock with nothing left in it
my buddy has flomaster system from muffler back with single pipe, and it sounds good. Not annoying like my other friend who had a 6cyl with doul pipes.
