Flat-towing

What sould I do? I have heard to just put the T-case in neutral and others have said that's not good enough that I should disconnect the rear drive shaft.
I do not have locking hubs or lockers.
thanks

t case in neutral, tranny in 5th. I've towed mine all over the place with no problems. Just dont go more than a few hundre miles with out driving it in gear, the will let the t-case pump run some.

I get the TC-in-neutral part. But what's with the tranny-in-5th? Why is that?

I've heard you're supposed to have the T case in neutral and the transmission in first or second. Main reason for this being, if the T-case is somehow not completely in Neutral, you'll know it immediately, before you go a few miles and tear something up.

I towed it to NC once and disco'ed both drive shafts.....not hard, but not necessary. Now when I tow, I just drop the tcase into neutral and go.

You need the tranny in gear so the oil pump will circulate the tranny oil through it. With the driveshafts in the tranny still turns when the axles do even when the t-case is in neutral.

Not certain, but that don't sound right to me. Drive shafts come out of the T-case, so if it's not engaged (T-case in Neutral), the transmission shouldn't turn.

Just thinking of things backward...wheels turn the driveshafts, driveshafts turn T-case, T-case turns transmission, transmission turns engine. reverse of the engin-transmission-transfer case-driveshaft-wheel order of normal driving. If the transfer case isn't in gear, it can't turn the transmission, can it?

the np231 (t-case) doesn't have a a "true neutral" which basically means that parts still can spin even when in neutral. the don't spin at the same speed but can spin none the less. You put you manual tranny in gear, most people recommend 1st, so that things still get oil when the t-case spins parts. It does completely disconnect it from the engine however.

Why it's not a true neutral, I don't know. I just know that it isn't.
