Fix for a leaking diff fill plu?

Changed my rear diff fluid and realized after the fact that the leak was coming from the black rubber fill/check plug. Any fix to this problem without buying a new cover? Would the same silicone adhesive work around the plug after it is filled?

the plug is just a couple bucks at the dealer. or if you had to clean it off with
brake clean and apply some rtv sealer.
