The order should also be cast into the intake manifold.
For determining #1 on the distributor, remove the plugs and turn the crank by hand. Have a helper hold their finger over the #1 plug hole - if you're TDC firing, you'll have pressure buildup in the cylinder. If you're not there, both valves will be open and there will be no pressure.
Typically, the relative locations of the towers is important - notice the two protrusions from the outer perimeter of the drawn cap? Those are the holddowns, and those are going to determine where you find #1 on the actual dizzy (which has likely moved.)
