Finally found a fix for Steelhorse hard door uppers

I've been battling with tightening my Steelhorse hard half door uppers for some time now. The problem is that they actually had a good design with the threaded pin inserts that the uppers screwed into but since they've gone out of business you can't find replacement parts anywhere. I started out using these inserts used for wood that was thin sheet metal and would kind of create new threads for the bolts to tighten to. Unfortunately, they still wouldn't snug up all the way and felt stripped. My solution was to buy a Helicoil copy cat from Autozone for $20 that included the tap, 3 inserts and the installation tool. I then took the factory inserts and removed the spring metal from the bottom and tapped them from the bottom up. After installing the thread inserts the uppers tighten down very well and act much more like full doors now.

Too bad warm weather is around the corner and with a little more work convincing my wife, I will be moving to a soft top for the summer.

Man, I should have thought about that! I was under the impression that since they went out of business you couldn't get any replacement parts.
