I got the cheapest shifter I could find.


I think the whole thing cost me $17.00
I use it for the winch and belt driven oba.

The connection to the throttle body.


The hold down/adjuster. I went high tech...

Have you driven around with it yet?
I don't mean using it as a "poor mans cruise control", but just normal driving?
When I 1st hooked mine up to the throttle body, it would/could interfere with the gas pedal. The engine would sometimes, NOT return to idle, but race a bit.
It did that randomly/ intermittently until I went to home depot and got that little gray thing that hooks to the throttle(in the 2nd pic above). I also had to epoxy the end of the black housing for the cable into the adjusting ferule it goes into in my pic 3 above. Otherwise the slack in the cable when I press the gas pedal would bugger things up a bit, and the engine would race a bit.

Just a heads up...

I used a sink clip from Ace Hardware or any home supply store to hold my cable. The sink clip fit perfectly in the square hole above in Jeepster's picture. Just push the sink clip in the square hole and bend the excess over the top. Fast and easy.

The sink clip took 15 seconds to install and looks like a factory install. ( My opinion.)

Most of my projects take about that long. My butt just doesn't have a forward moving gear as of late.

Jeepster93 has a good point here. I installed a setup almost exactly the same as yours and it worked great for a while but every once in a while not allow the jeep to return to idle. Its not the end of the world as normally just revving with the hand throttle would free it up. Only once did I actually have to get out and take the cable off the throttle body because it would not drop lower than 2500 rpm's.

A suggestion for anyone considering this project- instead of WD40 or grease use mountain bike cable lube from a bike shop. WD40 and grease will make it slippery to start with but get gunked up quickly inside the cable housing and could cause more problems in the end.

All in all a great write up though!

"Some concerns I had never arose. I've seen some setups using a chain to connect to the throttle linkage so as not to hinder normal throttle operations. I wasn't sure if my new cable would interfere with smooth pedal operation, but it doesn't. The new cable goes slack when the gas pedal is pressed. No worries."

The WD-40 was a VERY LIGHT coating, used ONLY to aid in threading the wire down the sheath. Both ends are virtually sealed by the end cap ferrules. The wire is galvanized. I don't anticipate any more crud getting in there than has gotten into the original throttle cable in 17 years....

Put some slack on you cable to allow the idle to be from the pedal only.

Grease is much better than cable lube. Due to the thickness it will last longer. It will not gunk up and actually help water proof the cable. Cable lube is very thin.
