Failed Smog Check

So my YJ just failed smog due to NOx levels being WAY over the limit. Everything else passed, but both the 15mph and 25mph test were through the roof with NOx. Most people seem to say to change the cat and O2 sensor. Anybody else got any good tips?

I also heard that in California (where I am,) if you fail, you can apply to have the government co-pay for emission repairs and if it still fails, you get an exempt certificate. Any one know if that's true?

Nox high someone just posted the temp sensor was an issue. The O2 sensor will usually make it run rich. Nox is lean. Check your fuel pressure and clean the throttlebody.

Check your engine codes to see if anything may be showing. I found my ecu temp sender was off. I had no check engine light showing

I have not retested yet but my milage went up 23%.

I bought a new cat but I have not installed it yet.

Yes they will help pay, no there is no exempt status. This thread has what I did to pass along with other ideas

How do you check codes on the YJs? My old XJ was pre OBD1, so I've never had to do it. Also, where is that temp sensor?

I would check codes as me tioned. You don't want to be labeled a gross polluter.

I had the same issue... Failed 5 times after: Tune up.. Oil Change, New Cat, New O2 Sensor, Coolant change... Then I replaced the Fuel Injectors with the 4 hole 19lb injectors and cleaned the TB and BAM... Passed with flying colors...

Tested fuel pressure today and it's low. Like 22 psi low. Tried to pinch off the return line, but it's rock hard. This is some great new info, but what could it mean? Bad fuel pump or regulator? Are those the only two things it could be?

Start with the Regulator.. I changed mine as well as the other things I had changed.. I had 41lbs on mine with and without the vacuum. Those dang little buggers are not cheap though.. $60 for it at my Orielly's and they had to order it.. GRRRR...

Did it increase when you disconnected the vacuum line? Did it hold pressure for 20 minutes ?
