failed echeck today high NOx

I failed echeck today in Ohio. NOx was just a little high, all other numbers passed. I just bought this 95 4.0 auto wrangler an have only driven it about 10 miles total before taking taking it in for testing. Had trouble getting a top for it, got that done today. any chance that driving it an running some injector cleaner through it will help? I read you can cheat a little by retarding the timing. I have a timing light from my 5.0 days just need to know how the jeep works (do you have to unplug anything before, etc). any info appreciated!

your engine timing is controlled by the computer so that isnt going to work...

on the 5.0's you could pull a plug, set the base then the computer timed it off that base

I your EGR hooked up? The EGR reduces NOX, verify that it is working properly.

Edit: sorry no EGR on your year. Brains not working yet this morning with the time change.

I didn't know we had EGR's. You should drive it until the cat gets up to temp. That's when it the most efficient. But if you really want to pass smog, replace the cat.

No egr on the 91-95. If you are running high nox it is usually related to the cat. Alcohol additive or a few gallons of E85 will probably get you through if it is real marignal.

it's not over by much. standard is like 1050 an I'm at 1115ish. there's some sort of vac lines coming off the rear of the valve cover that the PO stuck in there an taped in place, could this be a little vac leak?

Try the alcohol, ethanol. You will need to replace the cat sooner or later.

Que I get the feeling you're right, hoping to pass it now an not have to deal with it for another 2 years an use that money to fix some other issues I found with it. thanks.

I was able to induce a small vacuum leak, but finally replaced the cat and have been groovy ever since

Exactly what I had to do, replaced my cat with a cheap universal from Oriellys and problem solved.
I just cut the Flange off my OEM one (catalytic convertor), and welded it onto the new one after measuring.

I'm going to try some alcohol in 93 oct gas in hopes of sneaking thru an replace the cat before it needs tested again in 2 years

If not, one heat range colder plug works too. You may have the high altitude CPS (on the bell housing) which is advanced slightly. More timing advance = more NOx.
