Factory gear ratio for Dana35 in 87 YJ?

What is it cause I think I need 4.11 gears?

Wicked YJ 10-22-2001 03:55 PM

If it is a 4 banger it has 3.73.
If it is a 6 banger it has 3.07

Nightclaw 10-22-2001 04:27 PM

:confused:

I thought 4-cylinders all had 4.10:1, and 6-cylinders had either 3.07 or 3.55:1...?

NaeKid 10-22-2001 07:03 PM

Actually ..

4cyl = 4.11 or 4.10 gears

6cyl = 3.07, 3.55, 3.73 gears

Mine, with tow package and all the extras has the 3.73 gears. My buddy that didn't have the tow package, but everything else has the 3.55 gears .. and another friend with the "cheap jeep" 6cyl has the 3.07 gears .. and he complains about it all the time!

If you look at the tag on the differential cover (if its still there), it will tell you which gears you have.

SFM1AE2 10-22-2001 08:53 PM

So if my diff tag is no longer there how do I determine what my ratio is? What are the different options that rated different gear ratios?

'94 4.0 5spd... 3.73, and not enough for the 31's I'm running much less the 33's going on.

Chock your front wheels and place the back of your jeep on jack stands. Put the tranny in neutral and turn the rear driveshaft by hand, counting the number of turns it takes for 1 complete rotation of the tires. You'll see either about 3 1/2 ds turns = 3.55, a little past = 3.73. Or you could pull your diff cover, count the teeth on you r & P and do the math.

Whats a good everyday gear for daily driver use? I got 31" at tires n it pulls great, i just see alotta ppl useing a smaller gear but im assuming ppl are usein these for rock crawling since i see thats more popular up here

superj 12-13-2013 03:59 PM

My 87 has 3.07, if I remember properly. It was fine when it had 31s on it. I have an auto and 6 cylinder

superj 12-13-2013 04:00 PM

Oh ya, I have the top model for 87 so I have all the options and still have 3.07s so you can't go by model.

jeepguy85 12-13-2013 04:10 PM

I got an 87 4.2 5 speed and 3.07s. I am going to 3.73s. I know, I know 4.10s are better. I like the 3.73 ratio. It makes me smile. :)

jserna 12-13-2013 04:43 PM

My 87 had 3.55 stock, 5 spd

ditto with the '89. www.car-parts.com can tell you the gear ratio options of almost any car or truck

Kingston 12-13-2013 07:36 PM

Is there a way to tell by the vin number?

jojojeep1 12-25-2013 06:41 PM

all i6 jeeps come with 307s if it comes with auto tranny they get 355 gears.

jbolty 12-25-2013 07:07 PM

lots of bad information and wrong guesses in here but I bet the OP has figured it out over the last 12 years.
