One question, do you have a measurement for the perches from the backing plate to the perch ?
Thanks Gage.

Locating the perches is discussed in Post#22. I measured out from the shoulder of the diff housing to the Inside Face of the perch.

I can get the outside measurements if you need them.

Okay, I went out and crawled in the snow just for you.

Looks like 5 1/4" from inside the backing plate to the outside face of the perch. Same for both sides.
I would double check that using the inside measurements as well, though.
Merry Christmas.

I need to talk about these perches for a moment.
As delivered, they measure 8" from end to end. This is ostensibly to help prevent axle wrap and can be used in either a spring under or spring over application.
In my spring under setup, an 8" perch would greatly inhibit spring flex, acting as a strongback, or straightedge, along the top of the spring.

The solution is to cut it down to size. The perches on the D35 were 4" long. The flat section of the New Spring Plate is 4 1/2" long. That sounded like a reasonable length to go with, retaining most of the central strength of the perch but not binding up the spring.

So...off with its ends!!
A little late, but if you call Dan at ruffstuff he will swap in sua perches. Edit: they have a bigger cutout though so if you get these dont grind the nubbies off!!!

Nice job on the swap! Did my 8.8 about a month ago. Well worth the time and busted knuckles.

Nice pickup, Pat. Those look suspiciously like the RuffStuff product but at a MUCH better price.

Good on ya! Now change your profile and represent!

I'm very happy with the 8.8. Just beat the hell out of it during Deer season.

It's a wheeling adventure just to get into my hunting stand area. I have to cross a 4' deep by 120yd wide creek, 6 miles of busted, rutted trails that are difficult to even walk on, half a dozen washouts and blowdowns, etc.

Then I have to do it all over again to get out each night.
Not a peep or complaint outa that rear axle.

Me likey.

This write up is very helpful Thanks !
couple Questions , apparently I need to do a bit more research .
1 what did you do to cover the tone sincere hole ?
2 this may be back tracking but could you tell a little more about drive shaft angel and pinion angle ? how you determined booth , I ask because I will be doing my SYE at the same time .
Thanks

I left the sensor hole and plug there and use it for a filler plug. Makes filling it easy

Here's what you need for the pinion

I thought a few pages back he said he settled on driveshaft angle x and pinion angle y, YMMV.
The general idea is to point the pinion at the output yoke on tc, and set it 1-2 degrees lower to account for weight and axle wrap.
Again, just what I have read. I'll be doing this very shortly too

Wow fast response . THANKS GUYS !!
I was thinking about taping the sensor hole for a pipe plug . Was wondering it had be done befor ? I read somewhere about a freeze plug that could be used , but could finde much more on it . The tone sensor has a magnet on it that could be useful . Thats how I first found the peaces of my spider gears . On the first axel I was going to use .
That leads to thr question about the l S carrier being weaker . I I found 2 at the local PNP yesterday . 1 had broken spiders like the one I already had . The other had what looked to be new spiders . I bought that one , because out of the 30 Explorers on the lot not 1 had a 4 10 open . I hope the LS isent a mistake .
Now to pinion angle . Thanks for the digrame . I hadent herd about the 2 degrees down for axle wrap befor . I was under the impression tha spring under wouldent realy have axle wrap . I clearly ned to do more research .
Thanks Joe

Hey guys! Thanks for checking in.
I already had the sye installed with the D35. The driveshaft was at 15* for that setup, the pionion was at 13*, for axle wrap, as per Arizona's diagram. Goob is right, there will be some axle wrap on acceleration.

Have someone stand on the brakes and slowly give it some gas while you watch the rear springs. You'll see all you need to.

I used 15* as a rough starting point for the new 8.8, put it under the Jeep with the U Bolts snug and set the Jeep back down on all fours. Protracted and adjusted from there.

It's all covered in Post#22.

Do the SYE first. Adjust the perches to get the proper geometry, ie. 1-2* below the SYE output and burn em in.

As to the sensor, i just reinstalled it with some RTV insurance.

If I was not clear on something post back.
Glad to help!
